#260 hey, can i have your old arm, or are you using it for something?
December 17th, 2010 |yay, it is friday, we can all stop pretending now!
i do not believe that having a robot arm would be anything but great. sure you would set off every metal detector, but you would get used to it. you would say, “just use your wand thingy, i will set that off for sure you guys.” i have an idea for an animated short about a kid with robot arms, but it takes me a long time to draw this comic, i would hate to think how long it would take me to animate something.
so how was your week? was it everything you hoped it would be? mine was okay. most of my week was spent watching the parts to my new computer travel across the country very, very slowly on the UPS tracking page. i cannot see how it would take a whole day to get from tennessee to california, our states are practically on top of each other.
i promised myself i would never build another computer, that i would ’shell out the big bucks’ for pre-constructed machines with logos on them. but then i went online, and the parts were so cheap i could not resist. and so i kind of dumped the project in my friend’s lap. i would finance it and reap the benefits, and he would be my factory worker. he has been a ‘good sport’ about it. i think he likes putting computers together. i do not. i do not like finding out that i did not buy a big enough power supply, or that my motherboard requires a different kind of RAM, or that after it is all put together it does not boot because something somewhere in the chain of expensive parts is not seated properly. that sort of thing irritates me, but he seems to enjoy it. just like he hates making art or writing, and i like doing those things. he will build me things and i will write stories and songs about him to pass down to future generations. we are symbiotic. that is why we are friends.
do you like to buy computers and pretend that they ‘just work’ because of magic? do you like to customize every piece of it so that you can maximize performance while minimizing the amount of time you spend not worrying about your computer? i do not know if i have decided how i feel about computers. all i know is that my machine will be awesomer than any brand-name machine i could have bought for that price. but if i did not have an indentured servant building it, the cost to my sanity might well be worth the price of a logo and a ‘pretty okay’ machine.
well, i hope your weekend is spent having fun. my weekend will be spent installing windows and photoshop and corel draw and cubase. also seeing tron. if you see tron this weekend, tell me if you like it. i think i am seeing it tonight like a giant fanboy. (full disclosure: i will be wearing a tron shirt, and saying things like, “flynn lives,” but deep down i will be afraid that people will find out i have never actually seen tron and do not know who flynn is or why anyone would doubt his being alive.)
seriously, though, have a great weekend you guys.

“…pretend that they ‘just work’ because of magic?” Whaaaat…??? Great. Tron: of course.
I am like a wizard of computers. I can use them and abuse them to their fullest, but I do not understand the “magic” and how it works, I just take for granted that it does work and I can use it.
Oh my gosh, I didn’t even notice you didn’t draw the hair. My mind just kind of filled it in on its own! The human mind is an amazing thing sometimes.
My brother loves doing computer work, so if ever I wanted a custom computer, I would be the one financing the project while he happily slaves away for me. I’m sure it would all be worth it, simply because I would not be the one doing the work. However, if I didn’t have him to do it, I’d buy an assembled machine in a heartbeat. The thought of doing all that work myself is rather disconcerting.
That is one sweet robot arm, btw…I didn’t even notice the lack of hair, which is highly over-rated, anyway. Today’s comic is one of my favorites.
